Introducing kids to a healthy lifestyle can be a challenge in our fast food, video game laden society. Thirty minutes once a week in P.E. class isn’t nearly enough to maintain the cardiovascular system, much less keep an overall healthy body weight. One thing that P.E. class has right though is that classes are fun and they allow kids to socialize. The Fit Express’ FIT-4-Kids exercise program along with their specially-made kids exercise equipment gives kids what they need and want.

So little Johnny’s not thrilled about running 30 minutes on a treadmill? It’s already hard enough for adults, who understand the importance, to exercise on a consistent basis. I’ve trained children, I can tell you from experience they get distracted and bored even easier. Introducing health and wellness at an early age is important and it’s up to us to give them a fun option.

There many ways kids can get physical exercise from after-school sports, jungle gyms, parks, recreational centers, kids gyms. However, most of these don’t consist of a strict program (that doesn’t feel strict) that makes them do at least 30 minutes of continuous cardiovascular exercise and also includes functional strength training using complete range of motion for all of the body’s muscle groups. The FIT-4-Kids exercise program contains the key aspects of fitness and provides cardio and strength exercises in a safe, fun and sociable way.

Fluid Interval Training (i.e. FIT) works very similar to circuit training. Exercise machines (each working different muscle groups) are placed in a circle or other arrangement. Every 2 minutes a central timer goes off and everybody switches to a different machine that they do continuously for the next 2 minutes. This allows multiple muscle groups to be worked simultaneously, the heart rate stays up, and it doesn’t get boring. Two minute timer’s just a suggestion; custom workouts can be easily created.

Worried about kids exercise equipment being dangerous? Don’t be! FIT is extremely safe! What do sports, rec. centers, parks, and jungle gyms all have in common? They all allow kids to do uncontrolled movements, on their own, with minimal supervision. Running around, kicking, jumping, swinging-there’s lots of potential for muscle and joint injuries! Kid’s don’t have the motor coordination to perform the unassisted exercises like squats, pull-ups, etc. with proper form and technique. Even when they could do these exercises, it’s not fun for them and they don’t have the patience or enjoy repetition sets. FIT is perfect, it’s continuous and it doesn’t require concentration or slow/boring movements.

Unlike most gym equipment you’re familiar with, FIT-4-Kids doesn’t use bulky machines with weight stacks, it uses Fit Express’ kids hydraulic fitness equipment. By pushing or pulling oil through hydraulic cylinders to create resistance it provides an extremely smooth fluid movement that is much safer and kid-friendly. Never worry about dropping a weight stack, pushing or pulling too far, or hurting joints. You can pause at any point during the movement! And unlike most gym equipment with hard-to-understand seating levers and controls, the FIT4Kids machines are smaller (for children 4′ to 5’9) with fixed seating and control arms. An easy-to-reach lever that controls if the exercise is harder (more strength) or easier/faster (more cardio) is the only option. So they can just get on and go!

Call your local kids gyms, recreational centers, schools, and ask them if they have a FIT-4-Kids circuit! Visit www.FitExpress.com for more information.

It is a universal fact that kids love winter. A soft blanket of powdery snow covering everything provides children endless opportunities for fun.-A much loved season for many children, winter symbolises the simple pleasures of snowball fights, [building-making} snowmen and ploughing through snow banks on a sled.-From snowball fights to sledding down hills and constructing shiny-eyed snowmen, winter represents endless opportunities for fun for most kids.}While kids should not be discouraged to play in the snow, there are some precautions that need to be taken to ensure the safety and comfort of a child exposed to harsh winter conditions.

Ensure that all Winter Clothes are Clean

Kids have a tendency to fall ill in the winter more than the other seasons. Symptoms like the common cold, flu as well as more serious illnesses like strep throat and respiratory infections frequently occur in winter. Young children are especially at risk from these. The best way to guard them from illness in winter is to keep your kid’s winter clothes thoroughly clean and free from disease causing germs.

When it comes to selecting cleaning products for kid’s winter clothes, organic is the way to go. Organic detergents are not only free of the harmful industrial chemicals that plague many of their non-organic counterparts, but they are also equally effective at cleaning dirt and grime. Would you trust a detergent with hazardous industrial chemicals on your baby’s clothes?

Dress in Layers

Dressing in layers is the best way for kids to beat the cold when playing outdoors in the winter. Merino wool outerwear and innerwear are ideal as they are not only warm but also breathable and non-scratchy – an important factor when it comes to dressing children. Avoid using cotton clothes for winter wear as they don’t retain warmth as other materials.

A long sleeved undershirt, followed by a turtleneck and two or more shirts rounded off with a heavy sweater or winter coat should be enough for the top half. For the bottom half consider long underwear made from a soft, breathable material like merino wool and a pair of heavy waterproof pants.

Heavy waterproof boots with thermal socks should take care of the feet. If your child is the type to do a lot of running around and exploring outdoors, make sure the boots have good treads for extra grip on the slippery ice. Finally, accessories like earmuffs, a winter hat, a good pair of gloves and a scarf should give more than adequate protection.

Keeping your Baby Warm in Cold Weather

Keeping your baby warm and comfortable during the winter months will result in a happy baby and well rested parents! Keep your baby’s extremities are kept warm at all times as they can get especially cold in a short amount of time. Baby blankets and baby merino clothing ensure that your baby stays warm and restful no matter how cold it gets outside. Baby merino clothing is not only warm and breathable, but also non-scratchy, making it perfect for a baby’s soft skin.

Here are some useful baby bedding guidelines for parents:

Go for Security and Comfort

Bedding essentials need to be as safe and comfy for that child as achievable. The option in material has a lot to accomplish with this so ensure that you receive sheets produced of pure cotton or something with great thread count. Furthermore towards the mattress cover, the blankets also have to be thick sufficient to present warmth during cold nights although not so thick that they are able to trigger accidental suffocation.

As the number of obese and overweight children in the United States continues to climb, fitness is a consideration that weighs heavily on the minds of parents, caretakers and teachers. The risk of health issues accompanying obesity among children provokes many fears that unless parents and children make significant changes in the lifestyles inhabited by our kids, diabetes, heart disease, and other weight related conditions have the potential to run rampant among American youth.

Importance of Fitness for Children

Although encouraging a healthy lifestyle, among children, that includes physical activity and fitness is vital to addressing issues associated with health problems and obesity, the addition of kid’s fitness can also promote a lifelong love. Fitness not only encourages physical activity, keeping weight and accompanying conditions at bay, it also helps protect children from injuries that can occur when they are not accustomed to physical activity, movement and sports. Most injuries that plague children completing physical activities occur as a result of a lifestyle that lacks movement and activity that can provide balance, coordination and muscle memory necessary for a fit lifestyle.

Fitness and Physical Activity Benefits

Despite statistics praising physical activity among children as a weight management tool and method of decreasing injuries during activities and sports, fitness among children boasts a plethora of positive results and side effects. Strong bones and joints, stress relief, self confidence improvement and better academic concentration are just some of the other benefits touted by a child’s active lifestyle, says HealthyChildren.org. In fact, according to the children’s organization advocating a healthy lifestyle among youth, children who participate in sports, physical activities and other types of fitness positively affects the social lives of participants, offering a socially acceptable activity and associated peers.

Implementing Fitness and Physical Activity among Children

Understanding what types of activities and scheduling conflicts are preventing a child from obtaining a sufficient amount of physical activity and fitness can be a good way for parents to begin to understand how and where transformations can be made regarding kids’ health. Tracking the amount of activity a child partakes can be as simple as gaining an awareness of their school schedules and whether they include physical education classes, recess and other ways children participate in fitness centered activities. Children who participate in a variety of physically demanding activities at school, such as extracurricular athletics or PE classes may not need as much prompting and extra fitness added to their day as a child who spends more time still and sedentary.

Set an Example

One of the best ways parents, caregivers and teachers can prompt children to compete in fitness activities and grasp a healthy lifestyle is by striving toward adopting a similar lifestyle that promotes and values physical activity. In fact, according to USA Today “No Time to Weight,” children with even one obese parent have a 50 percent chance of being obese themselves. Children with two obese parents have an 80 percent chance of following in their footsteps, the article continues. Children who observe healthy lifestyles in their parents and role models have a better chance of adopting similar habits, highlighting the vital role parents play in influencing the fitness levels and physical activity of children.

Kids love to play outdoors and we love to see them have fun, right? But playing the same outdoor game again and again can be boring to your kids so you have to be a little creative. Actually, with just a little imagination you can create hundreds of ways of having fun outdoors. Here I’ll share to you some of the fun activities for kids that you’ll surely enjoy playing with your kids.

Obstacle Race

Nothing can be more fun than to watch your toddler go through your homemade obstacle course. This is surely one of those activities for kids that can make you laugh. And I’m sure your little one will enjoy crawling through a big box, walking along a rope, and stepping onto old clothes.

Old Time Favorites

Century old games such as, What’s the Time, Mr Wolf? Simon Says, and Ring-a-Ring-a-Rosie are still fun to play. Remember those days when you were playing them with your neighbors? A lot of things must have changed around the neighborhood, but these remain as some of the favorite activities for kids.

Have Some Exercise

Another one of those fun activities for kids is strolling. Instead of driving to a mini-store to get some bread or milk, why not stroll with your kids? What makes this activity even better for kids is when you act as spies as you walk. Check out the leaves, the local cats, and the snails as you go.

A Work of Art

While strolling to the shops, make sure you ask your kids to collect some simple treasures—like leaves and feathers, which you can use later on to do some simple collage. Give them a piece of paper to be the base of their collage. Then using glue let them stick all their collections onto the paper as artistically as they can. I’m sure your little ones will crave for more of these activities for kids.

Go Treasure Hunting

Make a list of treasures for your kids to find. Then head your small team of treasure hunters out into the local neighbourhood and find the items on the list. After playing this, I’m sure you’ll agree that this is indeed one of those fun activities for kids.

Write All You Can

Let your little ones write on any piece of concrete using a jumbo-sized chalk. Like the other activities for kids that I’ve shared, this one can occupy them even for ages.

Splatter on the Puddle

Next time it rains, look for raincoats, gumboots and umbrellas. Play with your kids in the rain and splatter through puddles. This is one of the outdoor activities for kids that they won’t forget.

Fun Ride

Lead a team of bikers onto paths with a mild slope. When you return, your kids will have fun trekking on Mount Everest.

Finder’s Keeper

Another fun game to play with your child is to look for simple items in the garden such as three black stones, five yellow leaves, etc as quickly as they can.

Spraying Spree

Hand a plastic spray bottle filled with water to your little one. Then ask him to spray each and every plant in your garden. This is not just one of those enjoyable activities for kids, but this is also good for your plants.

Go Green

Watching plants grow and produce flowers is probably one of the best activities for kids. This is activity can be a combination of fun and learning.

Indiana Jones

Spend some time hiding some tiny treasures, such as candies and toys, around the garden. Then organise your kids to go treasure hunting.

Tea Party

Organize a tea party for your little guests using just a tea set and a small table. Let them have fun as you serve them with some biscuits and water.

Fun Ride at the Park

Bike parks are great places to do some fun activities for kids. This is also a safe place for them to master their biking skills.

Take a Ferryboat

Being out on the water will definitely bring joy to your little ones, and to you, too.

Bushwalking

No kid would miss the chance of going for a bushwalk. What makes bushwalking as one of the favorite activities for kids is that it’s a good time for them to get dirty as they roam freely and ‘talk’ with beetles and flowers.

Fly A Kite

Flying a kite is fun. And did you know that activities for kids can be a whole lot better if you make it more personalized? Here’s how: Cut a cardboard into a diamond shape, put on some decorations, make a hole in one end and then attach a long piece of wool through it. Let your toddler have fun running with a kite flying behind her.

Mini-Olympics

This is surely one of those activities for kids that are simple and fun. All you need to do is set up a simple course at the playground for your kids. Ask them to go through it while timing them. Brace yourself as you watch them beat their own record in every lap.

Catch Games

Should you’re toddler be a beginner in aerial catches, start by training her roll the ball. When she’s already used to it, you can already bounce the ball towards her. Then try gentle throws until she becomes an expert in catching balls.

Sail A Boat

One of the best activities for kids is that of sailing a boat, even with just a model one. Make it in your own house with materials such as paddle-pop sticks, polystyrene foam ice cream containers, or paper. Design your own boat as uniquely as you can. Then take it to a backyard pool or a pond. Have fun sailing!

Paint with water

Give each kid a paintbrush and a container of water and let him paint anything on the back fence and trees. These are great activities for kids that encourage their creativity.

Colourful Waterplay

Now here’s one of those activities for kids that is fun but a bit messy so kids must play it outdoor with an apron. Head outside with bottles of water and a variety of food colorings. Then let your kids mix and match the colors until everyone has the same uniform color in each bottle.

Bookworms

If you’re thinking of activities for kids that are not only fun but also enriching, then consider reading books to them. And yes, books aren’t just read in your bedroom. A shaded part in your yard can be a perfect place to enjoy a book with your child. Spread a rug and take out those books.

Be Sandy

Let your little ones go wild in their imagination by making anything such as pizza, cake and even castles using sands. Just supply them with small buckets, your old kitchen utensils, and biscuit cutters. This is indeed one of those activities for kids that can bring out the best in them.

Hidey-Hole

And when you think you’re running out of ideas of fun activities for kids, here’s one you should really try make an outdoor home using a sheet and some chairs.

Let Your Young Artist Shine

Make the most out of a sunny day, by setting a table outside. Next, arrange an easel, spread the crayons, the glitter glue and encourage your kids to be crafty.

My list of fun activities for kids ends here. Actually, the list can be endless if you just add your own activities in this list or even make your own variations. What is most important is that you and your kids will have fun!

Baseball is among the top favorite American pastimes of all ages. Not only is it a tradition, baseball connects families and communities together in the spirit of sportsmanship and good old fashion fun. And for children it can be the first step in teaching the importance of teamwork, following rules and how practice CAN make a difference.

On a personal level there are fathers everywhere, who can barely contain their excitement and purchase baseball gloves before their children even understand what it’s all about. Who hasn’t seen a toddler in a ball cap and a jersey?

By the time winter is over, you will find parents and their children in back yards or the nearest baseball field ready to start the season and get back into the swing of the game. Teams are formed and training begins. If this is your first time, here are a few tips to remember whether you are teaching your own child or you have stepping into the role as the neighborhoods new coach:

Be Their Role Model

Teaching baseball is not only about how to catch, throw and hit a ball, it’s about teamwork, positive attitude and perseverance. Just by observing how you handle real games situations, your team can see how seriously you are about the rules of the game and your level of sportsmanship. Leading by example shows your ethics and attitude about wins and losses. Remember kids look up to you not only for instruction, but for guidance as well.

Stay positive

Everyone learns at different speeds so keep in mind that patience and positive reinforcement is vital. You can help them develop the skills to communicate their fears, ask questions and ease their worries about their own abilities.

Show Them You Care

Make time to listen to their concerns, laugh with them and be a shoulder when they need that little bit extra. They are not just learning about baseball, they are learning about interactions with people other than family.

Make Sure It’s Fun

No matter what the age, keeping kids motivated and interested in the game can be easier when you keep the game fun. Encourage the kids to invite family members and friends to watch your baseball practices.

Motivate Them To Improve

Focus on their strengths and the skills they need improvement. Ask them where they think they may need help. Don’t pressure your kids by talking about trophies, scholarships and million dollar deals. You are there to support their dreams, not dream for them.

Emphasize Organization and Discipline

As a coach, you need to make sure to communicate what you want from your players and what you expect from your team. By establishing rules and order in your coaching style you keep the kids in control of their actions and keen in their new skills as they continue to learn.

Let Them Learn By Doing

Explain to your kids that learning the basic rules, and methods is important, but it is through practice they will master the in’s and out’s of baseball. Be available for additional help when they need it and remind them often that indeed practice does makes a difference.

Spending the time to teach baseball to kids requires a commitment of time and patience. Never use pressure to make them learn too quickly, and allow them to improve at their own pace. Help them believe in themselves and reassure them that it is all right to make mistakes. After all, there are no real mistakes, there are only new lessons to be learned.

It’s a girl!! Of course she’s the most beautiful thing you have ever seen (natch), but what are you going to name her?

Well, it seems that you now have endless possibilities for baby girl names and the truth is that you can call your little precious bundle anything you want – within reason. But beware – something that sounds really cute for a chubby-cheeked 2-year-old with ribbons, could prove extremely uncool for a stroppy 15-year-old and may sound downright embarrassing for a 25-year-old trying heading for an executive interview.

The problem is that, although there is a tendency to be quite conservative when naming boys, parents often see baby girl naming as an ideal excuse to exercise their more “creative” instincts. But its sooooo easy to step over into the weird zone where your cute baby girl becomes something of a fashion accessory, like the latest Fendi bag. Nowhere is this more prevalent, than in the world of celebrity baby girl names; Demi Moore and Bruce Willis are the parents of Rumer Glenn, Scout LaRue and Tallulah Belle, Sly Stallone’s daughter is Sistine Rose, Christie Brinkley has a daughter called Sailor…the list goes on.

But the dangers of doing this are perfectly summed up by a beautiful, intelligent young lady by the name of Peaches. Daughter, of the sainted Sir Bob Geldof, the then 16-year-old Peaches Honeyblossom Michelle Charlotte Angel Vanessa Geldof made a statement in 2005 appealing to all celebrities to stop giving their children ridiculous names. She said “”I hate ridiculous names, my weird name has haunted me all my life”. Well said that girl – the perfect warning for all self-absorbed celebrity parents-to-be. Of course, some people think she actually got off lightly – her sisters are called Fifi Trixabelle, Pixie and Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lilly!!

Another fascinating example of the constant search for unusual baby girl names, is the modern fashion in certain sections of the African American community to give baby girls exotic sounding names consisting of 3 syllables and ending in “A”, especially “SHA”, or “QUA”. This fashion has grown significantly over the last generation and it’s difficult to trace its origins. Possibly, it may have something to do with the drive to create African-sounding names, since many African names end in the letter “A”. Anyway, whatever the reasons, apart from anything else, at least it’s a great source of material for some of our great African American comedians!

But apart from the more exotic names, what are the current trends in baby girl naming? Well, in the US, the trends are still for relatively conservative names – although less so than baby boy names. The most popular name every year for the last 10 years has been Emily (meaning “Industrious, eager”) and Hannah (“Grace of God”), Madison (“Son of a mighty warrior”), Elizabeth (“Consecrated to God”) and Samantha (“Listens well”) have also remained firmly in the top 10 over that time. Interestingly, Madison has a meaning which is “son of…” but has remained one of the most popular baby girl names for several years. Is this yet more evidence that the females are taking over? They’re even taking our names now!

Even further down the list of most popular baby girl names, there are few surprises. Although, there is not the same focus on traditional, biblical-based names as with boys, the list is filled with mainly traditional (and beautiful) names. Girl’s names – much more than boy’s names – are often subject to the prevailing culture and the influence of famous people. It’s interesting to see that the name Chelsea (“River landing place”) entered the US top 100 in 1984, rose to its highest level of number 15 in 1992 – the year Bill Clinton first became president. Then after a few years of being quite high in the ranking, it completely dropped out of the top 100 in 1999, as the Clinton era began to draw to a close. Was the brief popularity due to the President’s daughter? Most probably!

But just remember that, when it comes to baby girl names, the “famous name” effect leads to short-term popularity, but long-term consequences. We await the strange spectacle of hordes of grey-haired old Beyonce’s and Britney’s attempting to shake their booty’s during the daily exercise sessions in residential homes…!

An ever growing number of thoughtful parents are concerned about the status of public schools in many cites across North America. At the same time, a good number of families are struggling to make ends meet. They simply do not have excess funds available to send their children to private schools. One solution that many families are embracing is home schooling. With each passing school year, more and more families in North America — indeed, in many countries around the world — are electing the home schooling for their children.

There are some definite benefits and specific drawbacks to choosing home schooling for your children. Turning to the positive elements of home schooling first, chief amongst them is the fact that parents have greater control over the education of their children.

One of the more significant complaints frequently expressed about both public and private schools is the lack of input and control a parent has over the education of his or her child or children. While there are certain educational standards that must be met when it comes to home schooling, a parent has a significant degree of discretion over how his or her child or children will be taught.

In addition to more control over the educational process, most parents who are involved in the home schooling of their children believe that their children are obtaining a far better course of education. Many of these parents simply believe that public schools are not up to muster and that home schooling ensures that their children will be properly educated.

Of course, when contrasting home schooling with the private school alternative, educating your children at home is significantly less expensive. The tuition costs and other fees associated with most private schools continue to increase each and every year. As a result, many families simply have been priced out of the private school market all together.

People who are involved in home schooling believe that educating children at home works to develop a stronger bond between parents and children. The very fact that children will be spending more time with their parents because of being schooled in the home enriches the relationship between the generations.

There are some drawbacks to home schooling as well. The primary complaint that some education experts have in regard to home schooling is based on the need for children to interact socially with other children. These experts maintain that one of the most important components of attending school — be it in a public or private setting — are the opportunities for children to interact with each other. These opportunities are more limited when a child is home schooled.

With that said, there are now different organizations and associations that have been formed that bring children who are home schooled together for different activities and events. Home schooling advocates assert that these activities and events allow children who are home schooled ample opportunity to interact with other children their own ages.

Most education analysts believe that the trend towards home schooling will continue onward into the immediate future. These experts believe that an ever growing number of parents are going to elect to educate their children at home as an alternative to problematic public schools and expensive private schools.

David’s mother explained, “Whenever David doesn’t get his way he throws himself on the floor, screams, kicks and cries incessantly. What can we do to help him overcome this behavior?”

TIP:
What is David getting out of this behavior? First make sure that you are not rewarding this type of behavior, positively or negatively because both will help keep it alive. If you eventually give in to this behavior by changing your initial decision (not letting David go out to play, refusing David a cookie), David has learned that tantrums work. Hence, when David wants his way he may think, ” a good tantrum just may get me that candy bar, it got me out of bedtime last night.” Negative attention (yelling, threatening, ridicule, spanking) seldom changes the behavior. Getting you upset may be just as rewarding as giving in to their demands. So again, make sure you are not unintentionally rewarding David for this behavior.

TIP:
Be proactive. Think of the situations that invite David’s
meltdowns and head them off before they happen. Do questions that require a yes or no answer provoke a tantrum? Instead of “Do you want a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch David?” try “It is time for lunch David. Would you like PB&J or macaroni and cheese?” Advance notice may help as well. “We will be leaving Grandma’s in ten minutes. Get everything you want to take care of completed before we go.” Is David more likely to throw a tantrum when he is tired? Then you may want to provide an opportunity for him to take a nap.

TIP:
Consequence. Be sure to tie the consequence back to the misbehavior. “David, remember the last time we went to the store and you threw a fit because I wouldn’t let you have that Power Ranger? Remember how you kept putting it in the cart and screaming that you wanted it? Well I am going shopping but you won’t be going with me. I just don’t feel like dealing with that kind of behavior today. Mrs. Hamblin is here to watch you until I get back. Try to make the best of it. Love ya, bye.”

TIP:
Move David to a different location. The key is for you to model taking care of yourself. Your ears hurt when you hear David’s screaming. You may not be able to control whether or not David has a tantrum, but you can control where he does it. “Tantrums are for the bedroom. Let’s go.” You may want to give him a choice. “Where do you want to be until you can get that under control, the bathroom or the laundry room? If David can’t decide quickly, you decide for him. Come on out when there is no more crying and screaming.”

TIP:
Notice the exceptions. Point out the times when David may have thrown a tantrum but did not. “I really appreciate how you came in the house when I asked without throwing a “fit”. You should feel good about being able to do that.”

TIP:
Give the behavior a name. This will help externalize the problem, which is to say, it separates the person from the problem. It helps David and the family view the behavior as the problem and not him (the problem is the problem). For example, you could call David’s tantrums the “uglies”. This can help put David and you on the same side in the battle against the “uglies”. Questions like “can you think of a time when you have beat the “uglies” David? How did you do it? or how do you know when the “uglies” are coming? What can you do to stop them? “David may enjoy the imagery of conquering the “uglies” and this can give David a sense of control over the behavior.

TIP:
Acknowledge his feelings. This aligns you with David and sets the stage for him to begin to work through his own problems.

David: “Dad, can I get this Power Ranger?”

Dad: “No, David I am not buying toys today.”

David: Eyebrows coming closer together and lip starting to pucker. “But it is the last one I need and I will have them all.”

Dad: “Not today David.”

David: Screaming and crying. “You never get me anything I ask for. You don’t love me.”

Dad: Acknowledging David’s feelings. “You must feel really sad about not being able to get the Power Ranger. I know I sometimes feel bad when I can’t get what I want.”

David: Sniffling. “Yea, I really want it.”

Dad: “Tell you what. (Taking pen and paper out of planner) I will write this down as “things David wants”.”

David: “Okay Dad.”

You can later use this list for surprises or gifts for special occasions.

TIP:
Tell David what you are going to do. “David, I’ll come back down stairs when you get that under control” or “I will be happy to talk to you when you are not crying and you voice is soft like mine.”

TIP:
Ignore the tantrum. If your have the will power to outright ignore the behavior you must remember that it may get worse before it gets better. That is, when David’s behavior doesn’t produce the desired results, he may turn it up a notch to see if a higher intensity level gets a response. Be careful. If you give in and respond to the higher level or longer duration, David learns that is how intense or how long he needs to tantrum from now on in order to receive attention.

TIP:
Direct David toward a different way of expressing how he feels. “David, here is some paper and crayons. How about drawing how you are feeling right now.” This is a positive, less annoying way of communicating how he feels.
