Nutrition during Pregnancy

by admin in Pregnancy

Proper nutrition is critical before, during and after a baby’s birth to ensure the best possible outcomes for mother and child. Nutrients such as calcium, iron and folic acid are particularly important for mother and baby during these years. Taking folic acid during the preconception period lowers the risk of neural tube defects, which are among the most common and severe birth defects. Further, adequate nutrition during pregnancy contributes to a reduction in low birth weight, and a reduction in maternal complications.

Good nutrition is essential to prepare the woman’s body to withstand the rigors of pregnancy and helps assure that the mother will continue to be healthy after delivery. The Department of Health and Senior Services has gathered these web links to provide information about proper nutrition as well as food assistance to help women reach optimal nutrition during pregnancy.
